Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) — 1.00% Cook County general-merchandise sales/use tax (70 ILCS 3615/4.03), TY2024; rev-resolved 2026-07-01 — the RTA rate is NOT uniform region-wide (Cook 1.00% general-merchandise vs 0.75% in the five collar counties, modeled separately per-city, e.g. the IL Aurora entry in this batch). This entry covers only the Cook County (Chicago) portion; the narrower 1.25% Cook rate applies only to food/drug/medical-appliance sales and is not modeled hereWho decides
The Board adopts the yearly budget and two-year plan by ordinance. It can set sales, fuel, and other taxes by ordinance. Those votes need a supermajority. On September 1, 2026, the Authority took a new name. It is now the Northern Illinois Transit Authority. It now has a 20-member Board. The old 16-member Board section of the statute was repealed that day. No elected seats -- the board is appointed. The board is appointed, not elected.

The fiscal year runs January 1 to December 31. The Authority holds a public hearing. It also meets with each county board. Then the Board adopts the yearly budget and two-year plan before November 30. That vote needs a supermajority. NITA's own 2027 budget page says the vote will be in December 2026. That gap is not resolved here.
How to reach it
NITA's main office publishes a phone line. To speak or comment at a Board meeting, email the Board's comment address. Do that by noon the day before the meeting.
