Who decides

Fort Worth uses a council-manager government. Voters pick a mayor citywide, and 10 council members by district, every two years. The Council makes city laws and sets the tax rate. It also approves the budget and picks top staff, like the city attorney. A City Manager runs the city day to day. The Manager also answers to the Council. 11 seats: Mayor (at-large) plus 10 district members, elected every two years.

When decisions happen

Fort Worth's budget year runs October 1 to September 30. City staff share budget updates with the Council from April through August. The City Manager gives the Council the full budget plan in mid-August. The Council holds work sessions. Then it adopts the budget in September. Note: in May 2026, voters let the Council adopt the budget at the same meeting as its hearing. That change applies going forward.
